Vale Mrs Marie Hegarty, Life Member

It is with sadness we advise the passing of our Life Member Mrs Marie Hegarty, peacefully on Wednesday 12 August at the age of 94. Marie joined the Executive Committee of FNA in 1970 and gave 27 consecutive years of volunteer service until her retirement in 1997.

During these 27 years Marie held various roles: Grounds Co-ordinator (18 years), Grading Committee (18 years), Summer Competition Committee (21 years), Permit and Protest Committee (20 years), FNA Rep Team manager of various age groups (14 years), Uniform Co-ordinator (9 years). Marie also held various other committee roles on the Social Committee, Carnival Committee, Regional Delegate.

Marie also initiated our People with Disabilities Netball group in 1990 and continued to co-ordinate the group until 2007. She joined the board of NetWest (governing body of PWD groups) and gave great service to them over a number of years.

Marie was honoured with Life Membership of the Willagee Netball Club where she was a foundation committee member, the Fremantle Netball Association and the People With Disabilities Netball Club. Her Life Memberships were awarded for outstanding service and commitment to netball at Association, Club and community levels.

Marie also played in the first year of competition at FNA in 1960 for Royals a single club team comprised of “Mums” and they could certainly play a good game of netball.

When ever there was a special social event on at FNA Marie was renown for her amazing Aunty Dot’s Lemon Marshmallow Slice, it was delicious. After her retirement Marie always looked forward to our annual Life Member’s morning teas and continued to be interested to hear of our latest developments and how the Association was progressing.

Marie was a very generous lady who loved her involvement in netball and FNA owes so much to the outstanding contribution she gave us. She had a positive influence on so many young girls and women netballers and lead by example.

Marie had a great sense of humour, she loved to laugh and make others laugh with her. She would do anything for anyone.

We extend our since condolences to her daughters’ Tess and Evelyn and sons’ Ross and Tony and her extended family.
